Beginnings of Methodism in Chrisney, IN

The Methodist movement in Chrisney had its beginnings in 1886 and the first church was completed in the summer of 1888.  This structure was used continuously for 18 years until it was destroyed by a fire in 1906.  The fire originated from a bolt of lightening during a summer storm.  In 1908, a beautiful new church was dedicated.

Another fire destroyed the second Methodist church in Chrisney in 1943.  Although severely hampered by wartime shortages, the congregation began stockpiling materials.  Worship and Sunday School continued in buildings on Main St.  The third structure was dedicated in 1949.

In 1968, the official United Methodist Church was created by merging the Methodist Episcopal and Evangelical United Brethren Churches.  Before that, Methodism dates back to the 18th Century, under the Anglican leadership of John and Charles Wesley.

At the turn of the new millennium, a decision by Chrisney and Newtonville UMC's to join congregations began the work of constructing what we call Cornerstone.  Cornerstone UMC's building was dedicated in 2002.  This is were our ministry continues the legacy and tradition of Methodists long ago.

In 2023, the members of Cornerstone UMC voted to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church to form an independent, unaffiliated church but maintaining its Methodist roots. The name Cornerstone Church Chrisney was selected to honor the community that we serve and our rich heritage.
